Social Media Sites Threaten to Go Dark To Protest SOPA
After Reddit’s success in getting GoDaddy to back off from its support of the online piracy bill rapidly gaining support in Washington, Stop Internet Piracy Act (SOPA), other internet content providers and platforms are adding their own pressure.
Jimmy Wales has threatened to turn off Wikipedia to protest the act, MSNBC reported earlier. Now , Google, Facebook, Twitter, Foursquare, Zynga and Etsy, are taking up the call as well threatening to "go simultaneously dark" to protest the bill, Extreme Tech has reported.

That these sites are even discussing turning off their services—which would have a serious impact on the advertisers as well as users—shows how serious the issue is to the tech community.
Certainly if a site like Google were to go dark it would grab most consumers’ attention. “I’ll admit, I would become furious,” writes Zdnet. “If this suspension goes ahead, the companies better make sure they explain to the general public why this is happening.
