Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 to debut in UK - but is it the budget tablet PC we need?

Samsung
has announced the imminent release of its latest tablet PC, the Samsung
Galaxy Tab 2. And, better still, it will make its worldwide debut in
stores in the UK at the beginning of March.

Much has been written about the lack of quality alternatives in the
budget price range here when compared to the US, where the Amazon Kindle
Fire and Barnes & Noble Nook sold by the bucket load over
Christmas.

So we were pretty excited to hear that, in all likelihood, the Samsung
Galaxy Tab 2 will be the cheapest Samsung tablet to date. But this of
course raises the question how cheap - and will it make the difference?

In terms of specs, it's hardly going to be a stinker. The screen will
be on the small side (at seven inches) and the camera isn't up to much
(at three megapixels), but it will boast the latest version of Android
(version 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich) out of the box. The processor will be a
respectable 1GHz, while there will be 3G and Wi-Fi only versions at
both 16GB and 32GB (in terms of internal memory).

So, with the exception of having the latest version of Android, the
Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 is slower (and indeed a little fatter) than
previous incarnations - hence the predictions of a lower price point.
But unfortunately Samsung has yet to spill the beans on cost.

This really could make or break the device. A super cheap Android
tablet made by a respected manufacturer such as Samsung could really
throw the cat amongst the pigeons, especially if it can gazump the likes
of Amazon and Barnes & Noble in the European market.

But another overpriced and underperforming slab will do quite the
opposite: many people are waiting and willing to be won over by tablet
PCs, but need the right price point to invest. We'll be waiting with
baited breath to see what Samsung has to say.
