Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim funds new US digital TV venture
The service will offer video programming for digital distribution through a variety of platforms
Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim is funding a new
digital television venture that will feature a show with former CNN
talk show host Larry King, which could begin before October.
Slim's
Latin American wireless carrier America Movil will fund the new online
programming venture, with a majority interest held by Slim.
Financial
terms were not disclosed, though the free video channel on the Internet
will be dependent on online advertising for revenue.
The online venture Ora. TV, based in the New York, US, is expected to start later this year.
The
service will offer video programming for digital distribution through a
variety of platforms including tablets, cellphones, computers,
Internet-connected TVs and other devices.
The venture will
initially feature English-language content, as Los Angeles studios will
produce on-demand content and various programmes that reflect
traditional TV in terms of production quality and content but will be
available in a variety of formats.
Ora.TV will be led by CEO Jon Housman, who until recently was the president of digital journalism for News Corp.
