Baidu: Apple Gaining On Rising Web Use In China

A report by Chinese search company Baidu (BIDU)
says that mobile Web use in China is surging, with more consumers going
online via mobile than through PCs in many key provinces.
The "Baidu 2012 Q1 Mobile Internet Development Trends Report" also says that Apple (AAPL) is gaining market share in China's mobile Web market.
The report this month says five provinces — Beijing, Guangdong,
Jiangsu, Shangdong and Zhejiang — accounted for 40.1% of all mobile Web
traffic in China in the first quarter.
The analysis shows that the numbers of people logging on via a mobile
handset was higher than PCs in Beijing, Fujian, Guangdong, Shaanxi,
Sichuan and Tianjin.
China Mobile (CHL), China's No. 1 mobile network provider by subscribers, delivered 63.8% of all mobile traffic in the period.
Baidu found that mobile device activity trends are changing in China. Nokia (NOK)
mobile phone users made up 22% of all mobile browsing activity. But
Baidu said this was down from 40.4% in Q1 2011. Activity for so-called
Shanzhai, or "knockoff" copies of Nokia devices, fell to 16.1% from
26.4%.
By contrast, Apple's proportion of total Chinese mobile device usage
surged to 5.9% in Q1 from 1.5%, while Samsung's share more than doubled
to 10.4% from 5.1%.
Baidu says Nokia's S60 mobile operating system still holds a dominant 17.2% market share in China. Google's (GOOG) Android operating system enjoys 14.4%, with Apple at 5.8%.
Baidu says its findings are based on internal company data on user behavior and mobile use in China.
